The human circulatory system, powered by the four-chambered heart, is a double circulatory system. One circuit pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated, while the other pumps this oxygenated blood around the rest of the body. This efficient system ensures tissues receive a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Step-by-step explanationWorked example
Blood flows from the body into the right atrium via the vena cava. It is then pumped into the right ventricle and then to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. In the lungs, it picks up oxygen and returns to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein. Finally, it is pumped into the left ventricle and out to the rest of the body through the aorta.

Common mistakes
- 1Confusing arteries and veins. Remember A for Artery, A for Away (from the heart). Arteries carry blood away from the heart, while veins carry it towards the heart.
- 2Getting the sides of the heart mixed up. The right side of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood, and the left side deals with oxygenated blood. Remember that diagrams are drawn as if you are facing the person.
- 3Forgetting the names of the major blood vessels. Key vessels to know are the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, and pulmonary vein.

What is a double circulatory system?
A double circulatory system means that for every one complete circuit of the body, blood passes through the heart twice. This allows for higher pressure and more efficient delivery of oxygen to the tissues.
Why is the wall of the left ventricle thicker than the right?
The left ventricle has a thicker, more muscular wall because it needs to pump blood at a higher pressure to the entire body, whereas the right ventricle only needs to pump blood to the nearby lungs.
