James A. Champy

James Champy was born in Massachusetts,
USA. He attended the Massachusetts Institution of Technology in 1959 and
subsequently graduated with a BS in 1963 followed by a MS in Civil
Engineering two years later. He then attended Boston College Law School
earning his JD in 1968, passing his bar exam shortly after.
Though Champys early ambition was to take his place within the ranks of
an established family construction firm, it seems that the path which
his career took him had ideas of its own. In 1969 one of Champys old
MIT classmates, Tom Gerrity, approached Champy with an opportunity to be
involved in starting up a new company that would build an automated
investment portfolio management system, so along with fellow classmates
Richard Carpenter and Fred Luconi, they founded Index Systems.
Champys plans to run the new business were cut short by the death of
his father in the early 1970s. He did not rejoin Index Systems until
1978 when he was appointed Vice President in charge of managing and
building staff.
Index Systems was acquired by CSC in 1988, soon after Champy became
Chairman, where he lead the company to international renown. CSC Index
remains one of the largest consultancy companies in the world today,
with over 2,000 consultants and revenue in excess of $500 million.
Throughout his career Champy authored and co-authored many books,
perhaps the most notable is his 1993 publication Reengineering the
Corporation (co written with
Michael Hammer), which gave rise to the concept of a leaner more
efficient organisation through the process of
Business Process
Engineering (BPE).
James Champy
James Champy is chairman of Perot Systems Corporations consulting
practice and also head of strategy for the company. He is responsible
for providing direction and guidance to the companys team of business
and management consultants.
Mr. Champy is a leading authority worldwide on the management issues
surrounding business reengineering, organizational change, and corporate
renewal. He consults extensively with senior-level executives of
multinational companies seeking to improve business performance. His
approach centers on helping leaders achieve business results through
four distinct, yet overlapping areas: business strategy, management and
operations, organizational development and change, and information
technology.
Prior to joining Perot Systems, Mr. Champy was chairman and chief
executive officer of CSC Index, the management consulting arm of
Computer Sciences Corporation. He was one of the original founders of
Index, a $200 million consulting practice that was acquired by CSC in
1988.
Mr. Champy is co-author of Reengineering the Corporation, a best-seller
which was on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a year
and sold more than two million copies; it has been translated into 17
languages. His follow-up book, Reengineering Management, is also a
best-seller and was recognized by Business Week as one of the best
business books of 1995. His next book, co-authored with Harvard Business
School professor Nitin Nohria, was The Arc of Ambition. Mr. Champy also
collaborated with Professor Nohria for the book Fast Forward, which is a
compilation of significant Harvard Business Review articles on change;
it was published in March 1996. His latest book is X-Engineering the
Corporation, Reinventing Your Business in the Digital Age. In this work,
he takes up the opportunity and challenge for cross-organizational
process design and collaboration.
In addition to moderating programs for the PBS Business Channel and
appearing as a guest on Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser, Mr.
Champys columns on management have appeared in ComputerWorld, Sales &
Marketing Management, Fast Company, and Forbes magazines.
Mr. Champy holds bachelors and masters degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and a law degree from Boston College Law School.
He is a life member of the MIT Corporation, the schools board of
trustees, and is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Boston
College Law School. He also serves on the board of Analog Devices, Inc.,
a world leader in high-performance signal processing solutions.
James Champy
James A. Champy is one of the founders of the management theory behind
Business process reengineering (BPR), and proponent of a process
oriented view of business management. Re-engineering the corporation: A
manifesto for business revolution, the book written by him in 1993 along
with
Michael Hammer was instrumental in capturing the focus of the
business community towards BPR. A massive 2.5 million copies of the book
were sold and the book remained on the "New York Times Best Seller list"
for more than a year. He is also the author of Reengineering management:
The mandate for new leadership, first published in 1996 and recognised
by BusinessWeek to be among the top ten business books of the year. He
is currently the chairman of Perot Systems's consulting practice.
